I don't want to give too much away, so just know that this is a spectacular experience. You must be at least 40 inches tall and children under 48 inches must be accompanied by an adult.

This is less scary than it looks, which is great for timid folk but a bummer for adrenaline junkies. You'll be shot up in the air, which will take your breath away, and then dropped - but gently, and not very far.

- Incredible Hulk Coaster

One of those coasters with a surprise twist, which might turn you Hulk green if you're just eaten! Watch that first hill, Dr Baxter!

- Storm Force Accelatron

Another barf-o-rama, this one's on par with Walt Disney World's Mad Tea Party - only in the dark. Good luck with keeping down your last meal.

- Toon Lagoon

Continuing the theme of superhero-comics, old cartoon favorite come into life here with spontaneous shows, midway games and a truly soaking water ride. There's just something indescribable about seeing Popeye busting a move in the streets.

- Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls

The confused Canadian Mountie has his hands full keeping logs jam-packed with tourist from hurtling over the edge of - oh no - a massive waterfall! Be warned - you will get soaked on this boat ride, which probably has the best design of anything like it.

A New Experience at Islands of Adventure

My return to Orlando after 20 years came with new experiences as well as old memories. On my last visit in 1991 the Islands of Adventure was not yet the attraction it is today. In fact it didn't even exist. At the time the only attraction from Universal Orlando Resort which was open was Universal Studios.

It's amazing what can change over the course of 2 decades and my eyes were opened to new attractions which I had never before encountered. Universal Studios is still a prominent feature, but right next door you have the City Walk, an entertainment complex with an array of bars, clubs and restaurants, and the Islands of Adventure, a separate park from Universal Studios which still features popular movies as its theme.

As you approach the park's gates you will be greeted by a huge lighthouse standing sentinel. The story behind this is that it calls in travellers from all over who have built attractions reflecting the tales of their adventures, hence the name Islands of Adventure. This is anecdote is augmented as you reach the park's entrance and see an amalgamation of architecture and various styles of building, adding charm and imagination to your experience.

The first land you may encounter is the Dr. Suess' Landing where you can find a whole host of familiar characters from the books and movies. This area is more suitable for younger children however as the rides a fairly sedate, but entertaining nonetheless.

The most popular area of the park is, without a doubt, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and is the park's latest attraction. Hogsmeade is the imaginary location of Harry Potter's universe bought to life with startling attention to detail. For any fans of the books and movies, this truly is a dream come true as you walk through the entrance only to be greeted by the Hogwart's Express steaming and tooting away as if it had literally alighted at the station.

There are many shops to explore on your visit, including Honeyduke's and Zonko's, selling confectionary and joke supplies. Olivander's has also been bought to life, selling a range of magic wands and even exciting guests with its own show. There is even an owl post office, so you can send your postcards and letters back home.

For the thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, the Dragon Challenge is a fantastic duel rollercoaster fashioned after the Hungarian Horntale and Chinese Fireball dragons from the books. The ride itself is quite intense with several loops and corkscrews, travelling at high speeds.

For people who aren't rollercoaster fans, The Forbidden Journey is a seamless ride simulator and makes you feel as if you are really flying through the hallways of Hogwarts, through the Forbidden Forest and finally speeding through a Quidditch game. You might just bump into a few characters as well.

Jurassic park is the next stop and once again the Islands of Adventure don't fail to impress on first impressions as you enter underneath a huge gate, recognisable from the movie. There isn't much in the way of thrill rides however, with the exception of the Jurassic Park River Adventure, taking you through the park to see various harmless dinosaurs, before veering off course after a mysterious accident. As you enter the restricted zone, there are signs of a velociraptor outbreak and evidence of a few attacks on the unfortunate workers. Coming face to face with a T-Rex is a terrifying experience, but just as you are coming to terms with the massive creature, you will drop down a rather steep slide and eventually soaked at the bottom. This ride was a lot of fun and caused uncontrollable laughter as the passengers look around to see their drenched friends.

We finally entered the Marvel Super Hero Island where a comic book geek's dreams come true. As you walk through the crowd, you might just bump into Captain America or Spiderman taking photo opportunities with the guests. There are some truly spectacular rides in this area of the park as well, the most noticeable one being The Incredible Hulk, a huge green rollercoaster which makes a deafening noise as it speeds passengers overhead.

This is by far one of the most popular rollercoasters in the park, with queues reaching up to two hours waiting time. Once you ride The Incredible Hulk you will soon realise why it is so popular. There is no chain lift to ascend the passengers, but instead a launcher, which shoots you out of a tunnel where you will immediately enter a twist followed by a loop and then a series of corkscrews. This ride is not for the timid!
Another spectacular ride is the Spiderman Experience. Considering this particular ride is almost over 10 years old, it is still way ahead of its time. Similar to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, this is a motion simulator conveying the illusion of falling and climbing skyscrapers very effectively only this time in 3D. The result is seamless and is astounding.

Finally, we had time for one last ride and that was the vertical launcher, Dr. Doom. This particular ride isn't anything special and has various emulations in other theme parks, but I had never been on a vertical launcher before so I had to try it. I have to admit that I was more scared of this than any of the rollercoasters. You are shot straight up almost 100 ft. and get a very good view of Orlando! My only issue with this ride is that it did not last nearly long enough and I wanted a few more launches; a clear sign that I had shunned my fear for this type of ride.

The Islands of Adventure was an entirely new experience for me and had come into existence during my 20 year absence from Orlando. It is clear to see why this park was so popular, adopting many well-known cultural and entertaining themes. Although this park is available with the regular Universal Studios tickets, we were able to enter with our Orlando Flexticket, with which the Universal Orlando Resort attractions are included with admission.

This park appealed to all age groups with something for everyone and although you might need be a fan of the movies which have been bought to life in this park, the rides and atmosphere will surely excite and astound you. Perhaps I will visit in another 20 years and see what other changes have took place in my absence!

Be sure to check out If I Ran The Zoo(TM) and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish(TM) on your journey through Seuss Landing(TM). A stop by the Green Eggs and Ham(TM) Café for a Green Eggs and Ham sandwich will complete your visit to this island.


The Lost Continent reveals mystical attractions of times past. Witness the live action of Poseidon's Fury: Escape from the Lost City and The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad. Choose between Fire or Ice and battle on the Dueling Dragons roller coasters. A fantastical world of Unicorns, mystic fountains and more awaits you.

Next stop is Jurassic Park®. Steven Spielberg's film comes true as man and dinosaur attempt to live together. Children will enjoy the Camp Jurassic interactive playground, while older siblings and adults will want to experience the Jurassic Park® River Adventure. The whole family will enjoy visiting the interactive Jurassic Park® Discovery Center. Add plenty of dining and shopping opportunities and you will have trouble leaving this island.

Toons from past and present live on Toon Lagoon Island. Young and young at heart will relish this childhood trip through the funny pages. Children will be able to meet all the characters at King's Row(TM) and Comic Strip Lane and everyone will want to experience Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls® log flume ride.

Marvel Super Hero Island is the final island to visit and possibly the most popular. Guests will witness some of the most thrilling and technologically advanced rides Island of Adventure® offers. Lines form early for The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man® and Incredible Hulk Coaster® which have become favorites of returning guests. You will also have photo opportunities with many comic book heroes at Meet the Marvel Super Heroes.

Islands of Adventure Thrill Rides

The Universal Studios theme park in Orlando is another masterpiece of how they incorporate movie magic and how the fans can join in this magic with its rides and attractions. There are four theme parks to choose from namely Universal Studios Florida, Universals Islands of Adventure, the Wet n Wild Waterpark and soon to be opening The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Islands of Adventure. We would take a look right now on the Thrill rides you can find in Universal's Islands of Adventure.

The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman - One of the most popular superheroes has his own awesome ride right in the heart of Islands of Adventure. The Amazing Adventure of Spiderman is the pioneer ride that combines moving motion based ride, live action and a 3-D film all into one. As this ride takes you on an adventure where some of baddies of the Sinister Syndicate stole the Statue of Liberty and Peter Parker is the only person who can save everyone. This roving motion based simulator ride takes you along with Spiderman through the streets of New York, flying around tall buildings and of course diving through the streets below in a simulated 400 foot free fall. With this ride from your friendly neighborhood superhero, it would surely blow you away.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster - Once again Dr. Bruce Banner has created some of the most high risk rides in the Islands of Adventure. This roller coaster takes you from zero to 40 mph in a heartbeat. It takes you on turns on a weightless zero gravity roll. As you go through a lot of dips and dives in this less than 3 minute ride, you will suddenly feel like you have the power of the incredible Hulk right through this whole experience.

 Jurassic Park River Adventure - Based from the Spielberg Dinosaur film, this river raft adventure takes you on a wild ride that you would never imagine. As it takes you from those harmless dinosaurs to the most hostile areas once you enter the facility. Of course the only way out of this mess is an 85 foot dive out of nowhere.

Universal Studios Islands of Adventure: Dragon Challenge

The Dragon Challenge

You'll take part in this adventure while you explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, at Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure. The thrills you'll experience during this adventure won't be easily forgotten!

The challenge waits for you in the deepest, darkest part of the castle. The walkway leading you to the castle is adorned with banners announcing the Triwizard Tournament, as well as banners representing the four contestants.

You'll be greeted by Weasly's crashed flying Ford Anglia - still running. Still honking.

You'll also pass by Hagrid's Hut and the Champion's tent.

Then you'll make way into the dark passageways of the castle. When you're in the castle, you can't miss the Goblet of Fire trophy displayed high on a mantle.

You'll move on from there, beginning your trip through drafty, dimly lit passages. Look above you and check out illuminated floating candles.

But your exploration won't end at magical floating candles.

Continue further into more long, dark, narrow tunnels, and watch out for a large, cracked wooden door. If you listen closely, you'll hear something behind it.

It'll sound like growling from a large beast. It is growling from a large beast.

If you wait long enough, the dragons behind the door will sense you're there and lash out at the door trying to get through.

At the other end of tunnels, you'll arrive at the tent where the Dragon challenge is waiting for you.

Ahead, you will see the boarding area where you will face the really thrilling part of this challenge!

You'll have to choose which dragon you want to conquer: the Chinese Fireball or the Hungarian Horntail. Above you, in the star-lit sky, you'll see silhouettes of giant, winged creatures flying overhead.

It's time to face the Dragon Challenge!

Dragon challenge is an inverted duel roller coaster- the only one in the world!

It is made up of two tracks.

The Chinese Fireball and Hungarian Horntail navigate two different tracks and offer two complete different and exciting rides. The Chinese Fireball can go up to 60 miles per hour, while Hungarian Horntail runs at top speed of 55 mph.

Although the Chinese Fireball is faster, the Hungarian Horntail has more loops and twists. Both rides last for two minutes and 25 seconds and include five inversions each.

A huge surprise you'll experience on this attraction is the near-misses where you'll within inches from walls, land, and riders on the other coaster.
